Well.. you really need to explicitly state your motherboard model/version.
I'm guessing you have onboard audio??

I've seen some contemporary boards with an i810 style sound... which
works best with the OSS driver, though I did manage to get mine to
work alsa through uninstalling and reinstalling lots of different
things.  Hard to describe.  Probably shouldn't of even said that
until we know what kind of mb/sound you have.
