I upgraded the BIOS to the newest version Saturday night and haven't had any 
problems with Linux since then.  Apparently the original BIOS worked well 
with Windows but not Linux.  The explanation above might have been the source 
of the problem, but I know that the power was completely disconnected for a 
period of time and I still could do nothing with the network under Linux.

Since the upgrade I have had no further network problems, and have directly 
booted from Linux into Windows XP and back with no issues.
