I also had the MCP51 on board NIC and dual booted with Suse 10.1/Windows.
It turns out windows would leave the NIC in a weird state. Suse would
bring up the NIC and it looked normal except that it was not
transmitting any packets(just receiving). If you unplug your box from
the wall removing full power before going to Linux and the NIC acts
correctly then you are having the same issue. I am able to replicate
the problem every single time after going from windows to Linux.
I believe there was a mention to turn off "wake on LAN" to get around
this issue. The other option was not booting into Windows at all... :-)
