Sounds like you've surpassed the ability of a word processor and need a
something closer to a desktop publisher. Have you ever looked into
using something like LaTeX or Docbook? For an easy to use interface for
LaTeX, try out "lyx" (should be on most Linux distro CDs). There's
probably a front-end for Docbook too, but as I've never used I wouldn't
know (a quick google search points to XXE and Morphon, but neither look
like OSS).
