So you cannot ping valid domain names, right?  [But] - Can you ping
any [valid] IP addresses?  In particular, can you ping the nameserver
you're using, or attempting to use?
 Could it be that you don't have any nameserver addresses in
/etc/resolv.conf ?  What do you have so far in /etc/resolv.conf ?
