This shows up in all areas of the economy, not just IT.  I know people
at universities in humanities-related departments who have been let go
because they didn't complete their Ph.D.'s in a timely fashion.  A track
record of several years' success is great, but you must have the
appropriate terminal degree if you want to remain in the profession.
That's certainly true in my profession (philosophy), and it is probably
true in yours.  Get the degree.
