You can set up LILO to boot to a small /boot partition on your first 
boot device (usually /dev/hdaX), the after the kernel loads to the 
initrd, mount the usb device's file systems and continue with the init 
process.

I figured this out by booting from a Knoppix floppy and loading the 
filesystems from an external usb HDD with a Knoppix image copied on it.

Newer BIOSs will allow booting from usb pen drives, Hard drives or CDROMs.

With Linux, just about everything is possible...
