i noticed it in 7.2 also.  one way around that is to have mysql
running and do a "status" on it periodically:

Uptime:			600 days 3 hours 37 min 28 sec

but "uptime" shows

  8:31am  up 103 days,  1:28,  2 users,  load average: 0.00,
0.00, 0.00

no idea what part of the kernel is screwed up, probably too few
bits allocated somewhere.
