Dave,
A couple of thoughts before I go to bed.
1. Apple is a little pickier about what CD drives it will boot from. Is
the CD you are using equipped with an Apple ROM or is it just a generic
drive? Apple ROMed drives are best, but some others work. I don't know
enough to tell you which ones are good, but try another drive if you have
it. Panasonic and sony are usually good because they made a lot of OEM
dives for Apple.
2. Try burning the boot disk to another brand of CD media. Remember that
not all CD drives can read all media. I had a system today that had a very
high quality CD drive(a Kenwood 24x True-X drive) that would not boot from
a CD Chris Cox gave me at the last meeting. I just copied the disk to some
cheap Office Depot brand media I have at the office and it booted fine.
3. Try putting an 800 meg or so partition on the drive with OS8 or OS9 and
then see if the iMac will read the disk you have. If you do this, put the
Mac OS partition at the top of the drive and use HFS standard, not extended.
Good night,
Ralph
