Your points all have significant merit. If you intend to idea shop, then
invite input. We could all consider such ideas as adopting FreeBSD. I
even went to MicroCenter to look at their offering. Having used it in
the past, I shuttered as I read the box.
I downloaded Solaris 9 and it failed to recognize my fairly generic
Pentium IV Intel motherboard and my DDR 266 memory. I tried it on a
P-133 pentium IV and it didn't see the video chip.
I have XP running on a partition which I used to scan and fax or test
something. I consider it and everything else I've used from Microsoft
something of a broken toy. I have MS certs and have run two medium sized
networks. I don't consider that an option.
I have a Mac cube running OS X 10.2 with all the patches and 1GB of RAM.
It's nice, but it's not Linux. Aside from that, the Open Group is going
after Apple for more than what SCO is threatening.
Let's see some alternatives.
