Have you checked for Edit->Mail & Newsgroups account settings option 
(with the M underlined)?  That's where you normally put the Mail & 
Newsgroup Server information...NOT under Edit->Preferences.  It is 
probably greyed out because you don't have any mail accounts set up yet.
