You may like to try xinerama again, but with a different window manager
(Such as sawfish, or enlightenment), I don't know how compatible these
are with KDE, but they are sensitive to head boundaries in a multihead
situation, window placement doesn't occur in the dead space, and
maximize is only to the head boundary for instance.
It has been some time since I played with this, but I was using sawfish
quite comfortably with a 1024x768 and a 1600x1200 monitor.
Otherwise, you will have to stick with x2x's limitations, or use
something like xmove (Which when I tried it, did not work with gtk
applications, but I could for instance move an emacs session to an xvnc
server, while someone else was logged in to the local X session, then
move it back once I logged in again).
