  if it is a cheap hub masquerading as a switch, it runs as fast as the
slowest network card attached -- in this case 10mbits.  

  The typical speeds for a busy lan are 500kBytes per second (about 5
megabits per second or about 1/2 of the 10 mbits speed).

  Get a REAL switch and you'll see your speeds go up.  Also, transfers
between cards are limited to the rate of the slowest hub.
