Ditto on trying the rescue disk.

Inconsistent errors would seem to indicate a hardware problem, most
likely memory if that is the case. A malfunctioning CPU fan can cause
the processor to overheat and cause all kinds of weird things to
happen. A faulty power supply, although rare, could be another possible
culprit.
You can try popping the memory in and out of it's slots a few times to
see if that helps. If you have multiple memory modules you can try
removing all of them and then trying them one at a time (if you are
using SIMMS you need two in each bank).
If you have another computer handy, try connecting the hard-drive with
Linux on it and see what it does. If it boots (remember to set IDE
settings in BIOS setup) then your problem is with your hardware. If it
does the same or similar, then your problem is in your Linux install.
If you can get the computer to boot off of a rescue disk, then I
recommend running a fsck on the drive and see what turns up in the
results.

If all else fails, you may have to reinstall Linux.
