You can see any error messages while X/KDE is running by doing a
Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get back to the console (or Ctrl-Alt-F2 - or whatever)
- and an Alt-F7 to get back to the graphical desktop.  This lets you
try stuff on the desktop and then flip back to the text-mode console
to see what messages that may have provoked.

(That's a *REALLY* neat feature in Linux - I sure wish certain
other UNIXen worked that way)
