There are probably several ways .  I just added

vnc-login       5901/tcp                        # vnc via xdcmp

to /etc/services and enabled vnc-login in /etc/xinetd.d.  Then on windows I
run "vncviewer myhost:1." where myhost:1. is an unused DISPLAY.  You may
have to select "GNOME" under Session menu in the login screen that opens
up.  Also, don't put anything DISPLAY specific in your login profiles.
Your home directory on "myhost" will contain some files like .Xauthority
and .xsession-errors.
