It always depends on what the user wants to do . A serviceable computer
that will do office tasks might not be up to gaming or CAD etc .
My recommendation to people in this situation is :
A ) Keep your costs pretty low and manageable . Basically , have a budget
in mind that you are prepared to live with .
B ) Buy the best "pro" used computer or laptop from yesteryear that fits
this budget .
My example would be a Lenovo X220 laptop . This was a solid machine with
great specs , was well supported in it's day (thus remains so) and can be
picked up for less than $200 last time I looked .
If laptops are not your thing , perhaps a desktop would be better .
If the OP really , really wants a mini-linux computer , there are TONS to
choose from , ranging from an embedded Raspberry Pi "computer" to general
purpose desktops like the Intel NUC . A simple google search turned up this
