[NTLUG:Discuss] Network hardware for Ubuntu

Thanks for the reply. I had assumed Ethernet when I said "firewall/router" but, to clarify, 100Mbps or 1Gbps would be fine. Anything lower would be too slow, higher would probably push the price too high. I should mention that other daemons such as OpenVPN are also running on this unit which precludes something like routerboard or other closed solutions.
Unless the "Open Ethernet" movement has changed from what I found on the web it's disappointing. Looks like the main beneficiaries are large corporations and hardware vendors who want to sell 48-port 10Gbps+ (as in 25 or 40, etc) units for thousands of dollars. The smaller need gets nothing.
I do need to take a closer look at Protectli's offering (below), it will be interesting to see what "compatible with a variety of open source firewall projects" means. Another problem with "Open Ethernet" is that a pseudo-open OS seems to be required although Mellanox apparently has released an Ethernet driver for Linux.
Another option i learned about today is that SuperMicro has a low-end unit with 4 integrated NICs, with a 4-port add-in card in the one available slot that might be an option - waiting to see if the price will be under $111-139 per port which is my other current alternative (ridiculous - even Cisco isn't that high).

Leroy,
That would be 8 USB ports?, PCI slots? 10-baseT ports? Floppy drives?
A nice firewall box I have been looking at lately is:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GIVQI3M/
It's small, quiet, runs a standard distro like Ubuntu or FreeBSD and
has 4 gigabit ethernet ports. It does not have 8 of any port, so I
don't know how good it would be for you.
