I'd consider as well a Chromebook that you put Crouton on

Go for something with one of the Intel Celerons (ideally one of the quad
core ones), and 4GB of RAM.  Depending on screen size and model you'll get
6-10 hours of battery life.

With Crouton, you should get any Linux app you want.  Most only have 16GB
or 32GB internal hard drive space, but I would just get one of these in the
most appropriate size (128GB is $30):

and leave it plugged into your USB 3 port at all times.  You then have a
nice, reliable Linux laptop with 6+ hours battery life, 128GB+ hard drive
space, and HDMI to connect a second screen all for $200-$300 in most cases.
