[NTLUG:Discuss] Linux scanner and fax

Looking for input/recommendations for both.

Concerning scanners, I've looked at the sane website and found a few
scanners I think I'm interested in but I really don't know too much
about what to look for. I also don't know whether what's in the list
are old or current market offerings. My interest is scanning general
purpose documents and, at some point , pictures and 35 mm slides for
archival purposes. I've discovered the hard way that I want some speed
(a Lexmark X5150 was too slow when I used it on Windows and the Windows
drivers were outdated). I have heard that, beyond some point, increased
resolution is a waste rather than a feature but I don't know where that
point is. A document feeder would be great but I wonder if that would
drive the price up too much. Any input would be welcome.

Concerning a fax, I'm assuming it would be an add-in card (but am open
to other suggestions). Not looking for anything fancy, just something
which will allow me to fax a document from my PC with decent
resolution. Again, any input would be welcome.
