Having all kinds of problems/weirdness:

 1. Network Manager is apparently installed (I didn't do anything
explicit to install or not install it) but fails on startup
 2. Configure an ifcfg-eth_ file with a static IPv4 address (when eth_
exists) and do ifup - either nothing happens or the interface comes
up without an IPv4 address. Using ifconfig worked even though the
man page warns that it is obsolete.
 3. Had multiple ifcfg-eth0* files (with different endings, only one
exactly 'ifcfg-eth0') with the correctly spelled variant configured
as DHCP, couldn't get an IP address on boot (Winders did). Removed
all but the correct variant and got a DHCP address.
 4. (All of the above was on one machine - this is a separate issue) Set
up networking on one machine, put the hard drive in a different
machine (different NIC) and booted - no DHCP address.

Any suggestions? I haven't heard good things about Network Manager, can
I safely remove it without destroying my network setup?
