Howdy,
  All our users are available over yp.  I have no idea whether I can
make FreeNAS understand our YP setup, but from both of your responses,
it appears I should try and find out.  I imagine FreeBSD can handle
yp, but I also prefer not to butcher the OS setup too much, so I can
readily update in the future.  I am running version 8.3 beta1 and I
assume I will want to go to the final 8.3, at least.
  I might have gone with a standard Linux setup with LVM and software
RAID, if I had understood zfs better at the start.  But, I don't want
to switch now.
