[NTLUG:Discuss] SSD on Linux Desktop

If your only consideration is boot time, then you are right, there would be little difference between the two configurations.  However, I expect linux to do more than just boot up, and I stand by my estimate of 85% (within my standard 100% margin of error on such statements.)

My SSD only system is either a 2G or 4G drive running puppy linux.  It says I have 2G, but I think i cut the drive in half and tried several times to get windows on the other half.   It is a old system restored. compaq n600c with a celeron 1.1g processor and 256mb RAM and a dying battery.  With a mech drive the battery would fail after cold starting on battery power in <30 mins.  On SSD, the system will browse the web ~2 hours before warning me it's low batt.  To be fair, I had a swap on the mechanical drive, and figure that over half the improvement was the elimination of it, regardless of mechanical vs. SSD.
