Neil,
  I have not tried this yet, but I have seen a lot of people write about
it.  I would look at putting the cd images on a pen drive with the
Ultimate Boot CD.

 I was going to try it, but the distro I needed on the pen drive was
Ubuntu and they include their own, distro specific tool to do this job.
It is called the Startup Disk Creator.  If you try UBCD, let me know if
it works.
