Howdy,
  You are looking for a high tech product called a resistor.  I can't
give you the correct valu offhand.  It depends on what your dc adapter
actually is.  There are some devices that are "regulated" and really put
out 6 volts.  Some are unregulated (cheap) and put out about 6 volts at
the expected current draw.  Expected here means how much current the
designers thought it would draw in the application it was sold for.
  A regulated power supply at the right voltage needs enough current
capacity.  If you need 1 amp, then anything over that will work.  A 5
amp supply is fine, except it draws more power from the wall than you
need(it's wasteful).
