Fred,
Usually Apache has to be compiled with the shared objects. You can't
just install mysql and it magically works.
Have you verified that the mysql and apache integrated properly? there
is a php command you can embed in a webpage to spit out a php generated
test page..
The reason I suggested xampp is because all that stuff works out of the
box with minor tweaks to php.ini or httpd.conf
