No joy on any of the previous solutions.

Earlier I mentioned that I had used testdisk with no success. DOH!
I was supposed to also install photorec, which I did and now the
process is recovering files and putting them on the freshly reformatted
spare drive. It is not as elegant a solution as the paid Data Recovery
but it fits my cheap nature. You know, the one that says you might
be an engineer if you've ever tried to fix a $7 radio. I think that in the
long run it would have been far cheaper for me to have spent the $45.
