I really believe they only way you can really go for a year or even 6
mos. or more is by NOT doing kernel updates (at least not booting
them!).
Granted, there has been some work to mitigate this so that many kernel
changes can happen without a full reboot... and there are efforts to
eliminate the issue altogether (not sure how successful that will be
though).
The more self-maintained and tainted stuff you have in your kernel, the
more likely you'll have to reboot... there just won't be a panacea/clean
way to deal with all of that.
