It turned out to be a driver problem.  Just changed to the next option
after the "(recommended}" option and all worked well.  In my case, the
printer is connected to a desktop on the local network via its serial
port.  Everyone on the local network can print to it -- no problems --
even a win notebook of one of my collegues can print to it through samba.
