[NTLUG:Discuss] smbpasswd not working

I am back to teaching Linux and have run into a problem with smbpasswd.
I attempted to make it work on both FC11 and FC12, but it does not
create an encrypted password for a user. The user exists in the Linux
passwd file. When I issue the "smbpasswd prof" command, then enter the
password twice, and then go back to check the smbpasswd file
(/etc/samba), the change has not been made. I issued the command on my
old FC6 system and it worked correctly.

I also attempted to use the GUI administrative mode, but it too did not
change the password. Not sure why, but swat also did not work (httpd is
on, did a service restart, created the swat xinetd.d swat file, and ran
xinetd; can bring up a simple test web page to test httpd).

Would appreciate any thoughts.

Dennis
