Similar situation, different setup. I have at&t U-Verse for my internet service, and Vonage as my VoIP carrier. I did this because 1) Vonage is less expensive, and 2) Vonage has a better feature set. After my BBU drained, and my MTA could no longer contact the mother ship, Vonage was smart enough to forward all calls for my VoIP number on to my cell phone. I know this doesn't help with the BBU problem, but depending on how much FiOS charges for VoIP service, it might be worth looking into Vonage as a service.
