(1) tried installing unrar - needs library past my current release
(2) tried Ark - calls the file unsuported (x-rar is the mime type)
... other steps omitted for brevity ...
looks like the (possible) answer is move to more current release and see 
if that helps.

PS:  Current - Mandriva 2008
       Upgrade - Mandriva 2009 (already have DVD)
       going to try adding 2009 as dual boot, rather than upgrade - 
wasn't impressed enough with it earlier to want to use it on a daily basis.
       2010 is probably also a possible option
