All
As one last gasp I reseated the memory and ran the memory test again -
no errors after 19 iterations - looked good, eh?
Linux install went swimmingly until - well it got nearly finished and
froze never to move again - sigh
After installing a new memory stick (removing the old one), everything
is golden - so far - on a "wait and see if there are any other issues" mode.

PS: As reported earlier, the disk enclosure to copy data to a Linux box
worked well
PPS: Interesting side note - I installed the old disk (the one with MS
still on it) as slave on the secondary IDE channel, Linux was installed
on the master on the primary IDE channel. I didn't ask Linux to set up
a dual boot, but it did (GRUB)??
