Well, one idea is that the DVD media is bad.  Wouldn't happen to be 
WinData brand would it?  I have a 50-pack with probably 30 left - 
anybody who wants to fight with them is welcome to them.

I had this problem with my own computer.  It was caused by the drive being defective.  It is certainly possible for a drive with multiple capabilities to fail in only one capability.  Also, the usual advice about cables and connectors applies.  Defective cables and slightly dirty connectors contribute to insanity.
