Linux built from source is nothing new.

 "from scratch" seems to mean. We'll give you this cookbook. Go out
there and download sources from places we approve of, and good luck
with the hardware/software integration.

      Distros such as Ubuntu appeal to users because the hardware/software
integration task is almost nothing for the end user. However, there are
nuances in a given machine that an auto-install might miss, and the full
capability of the hardware may not be enabled.
