Howdy,
 In xchat, you will find what they call a list of networks.  The
quickest thing is to find one of those that looks like you would never
use it and edit it.
  There will be a list of servers.  delete all but one, if there are
multiple servers listed.  Change that one to say   irc.freenode.net
 There will be an entry field for favorite channels.  put in #ntlug
 Close the edit dialog.  Click once on the network name to select it and
change the name to ntlug.  You are almost there.  Now try to connect to
that network.
