You should always insert the device (unless it's there at boot), mount
it (after checking to see if it's mounted if it was there at boot), do
whatever you want with it and unmount it before removal.
I have a question about the "reboot into a panic of grub loading error
22". I've never heard of a grub panic and suspect that this was a
kernel panic. Were there any other messages associated with the "error
22"? Providing more details and being precise about the messages
received and order in which they were received will probably be
necessary if anyone is going to try remote troubleshooting.
At this point my first troubleshooting step would be to power off (since
you aren't going anywhere after the panic anyway), unplug the device and
reboot. If it comes up then insert the device, mount it, etc. If it
doesn't come up then I hope someone else has some ideas.
