I don't have an answer. However, I can tell you of times when I've
filled up my /boot on other distros that keep the old kernels around.
So there is a potential downside to the keep em all approach.
You CAN always copy them (old ones) and create manual grub entries... but as
you said, there is a potential for a mess depending on what happens
when.
