Hi Fred:

Whatever type of file your daughter is sending, I can almost guarantee 
there is a Linux program which can open it.  What kind of files is she 
sending?

BTW, You are on a good track with installing XP to dual-boot with Linux. 
  Vista does not play nice with anyone.  Peace, Dennis
