Actually, I have heard where there are some strange problems with
virtual disk access as one upgrades from VMWare server v1.03 to v1.04.
One solution was to fill up the virtual SCSI controller with small
virtual disks to restore functionality.  It's ugly, but it works in that
particular case.  You didn't mention if you had updated your VMWare
server or what version you are using... it can make a difference.
