[NTLUG:Discuss] console size on a Vaio PCG-C1VP

the native resolution on this system is 1024x480
Xorg is happy and EDID sets it up properly for X

but the console stays limited to vesa modes, meaning I get no bigger
than 640x480, with the resulting 80x25 console.
I can load different fonts to increase the amount of text but smaller
fonts on the small screen is not the most usable option, and that only
increases the number of lines, not columns.

Although I found info to use SVGAtextmode to set this up, it has
issues when moving in and out of X.
I found a patch for kernel 2.4 that gives the ability to support the
screen size within the framebuffer driver.
http://www.sol4.net/linux/pb-console.shtml

But alas 2.4 is not an option. Does anyone know of a fix?
Or are there any coders on the list that are dying for a new project
like redoing this patch for 2.6 ? ;^)

Thanks
./aal
