We just have 2 linux servers host in the Planet.com
Server boxes are RHE 5. booted on runlevel 3 mode.

Their don't install vnc server for us and I have to do it by myself.
I have vnc installed.

1. start vncserver:
#service vncserver start

Starting VNC server: 2:root xauth: (stdin):1: bad display name "PDP-PLANET123:2" in "add" command
New 'PDP-PLANET123:2 (root)' desktop is PDP-PLANET123:2
Starting applications specified in /root/.vnc/xstartupLog file is /root/.vnc/PDP-PLANET123:2.log
                                                           [ OK ]2. tried vncviewer:
# vncviewer 127.0.0.1:2

VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1.2 for X - built Jan 15 2007 10:33:32Copyright (C) 2002-2005 RealVNC Ltd.See http://www.realvnc.com for information on VNC.vncviewer: unable to open display ""

I have the same vncserver setting on the in-house linux box and it works. so I believe, something wrong on the host boxes.

I did:
which xdm

I can not see the xdm

I wonder I don't have X server installed or not running. Am I wring?
if so, how do I check if the X server is installed and running?

Please help, Thanks.
