I have been trying - unsuccessfully - to put hit counter on the home
page of a very basic Apache server. The home page index.html has
just enough to show a page title and to that I add whatever hit counter
code the respective authors suggest, then add whatever files are needed
per the instructions, which always suck. I have tried 5 different counters
and, so far, nothing. I did get a rectangle of a background color which
was configurable with some dashes (once) across the rectangle which I 
assumed was where the counter digits belonged. That was the best of the lot.

Does anyone have a simple hit counter that actually works with
installation instructions that are readable and accurate? I want the person
accessing the home page to see a counter with digits in it that increment
each time the site is visited. Simple. Nothing fancy, No database, just
a %$#@! hit counter.
