What distro are you using?  Have you tried logging in on a command 
line?  If you can, log in as root.  Depending on your distro, you should 
be able to use apt-get or yum to reinstall gnome packages if you want to 
go back to gnome.  KDE shouldn't be using any different login 
credentials - authentication is handled the same regardless...
