A member of my own family is an expatriate.  He has been living
outside the US for many, many years now.  And he likes it.

The pay is extreme.

Where he is at now he gets an additional $3000/mos. on top
of his normal pay.  Difficult to say no to that.  Especially
since he has 3 kids to put through college.

So... economically, it's like you have said.. and even more
than what you have said.
