But, if you're using udev, you might need to edit udev rules someplace.
I think the default udev install for Slackware uses
/etc/udev/rules.d/network-devices.rules
I don't know how recent your install is, but if your using a 2.6 kernel and
udev, this might be an issue.
If not, my comment is irrelevant.
