You may also want to consider obtaining a copy of Knoppix. Lots of good
material, both on-line and printed, for using Knoppix. For example, see
chapter 17 of "Knoppix for Dummies", chapter 6 from "Knoppix Hacks", or
part II in "Hacking Knoppix." Each of those deals with repairing Linux
using the Knoppix live CD.
Also, the latest Knoppix (5.1.1) supports write access to NTFS
filesystems. Pretty nice if you have to edit, for example, the boot.ini.
