Have you upgraded your openGL package or screen saver package recently?
I had this exact problem on my Ubuntu 6.06 system a while ago. I
eventually figured out it was with the openGL screen savers. What's
more is that I installed that version of Ubuntu on several machines, and
they all had the same problem. One installation was an upgrade from
Ubuntu 5.04 which did not have the problem before the upgrade.
My workaround is to just make sure that I never run an openGL screen
saver explicitly or via "random" mode.
