Epilogue:

The 1GB flash drive cat toy that was returned to 
Microcenter 'cuz it didn't work anymore turned into
a shiny new 2GB unit in my mailbox today. My hat
is off to MC for standing behind their stuff. That
random act of kindness may someday offset my 
distaste for their morphing into a mini-Fry's, complete
with mail-in rebates up the wazoo.
