I found (3 past their teens now) that 2 simple things pretty much kept
life manageable.
First, we kept the computer out in the main part of the house. We didn't
have to hang around watching everything that they did. But, since the
computer was in the dining room someone could walk by at any time without
warning.
Second, I asked my kids 1 simple question. Do you have any doubt that if
I wanted to I could find what site you had visited? Of course I had the
advantage, like others here, that my kids knew that I spent most of my
life working with computers.
Just knowing that I could probably catch them if I wanted too, and where
the boundaries were, was enough. IMHO, there's no need to spy on the
kids, just being around, letting them know what the limits are, and that
you really do have the power if you chose to exercise it, is enough most
of the time.
